Pitzer Athletes Dominate Trails, Water, Hardwood

Via The Student Life, Pitzer Sagehens took 3 of the 4 "Sagehen of the Week" spots.

Claremont's fastest female runner at last weekend's Western Regional preview meet is Roxy Cook '13, who finished 9th overall in a field of 117, and 3rd overall out of all SCIAC runners.  Cook led Pomona-Pitzer in her first ever 6k race, and in fine style.  Again, from The Student Life:

“To be honest, I didn’t even realize that it was a longer distance until after the race,” Cook said. “I must have missed that crucial detail in one of [head coach] Kirk [Reynolds]’s team meetings. Oh well. I guess maybe not paying attention worked out for the best. After the third mile I thought, ‘Huh, shouldn’t this be over?’ But, well, can’t really stop right in the middle.

Love it.  Cook should never attend a team meeting again!

The top male Pitzer Sagehen is men's water polo player Matthew Ward '11 (incorrectly printed in The Student Life as a freshman).

In one of the biggest wins in school history in any sport, Matthew "Tusk" Ward picked the most opportune time to score his first goal of the season when he put the Sagehens up [against the Santa Clara University Broncos]  7-6 near the end of the third quarter.

Finally, volleyball setter Kenzie Aries '12 played a key role sweeping Cal Tech, La Verne, and Cal Lutheran.  She set 38 assists, made 3 service aces, and led the team with a .214 kill percentage against La Verne.  Against Cal Lutheran she contributed 40 assists, putting her at 4th in the league with 504 assists.

Other Pitzer athletes who made a strong impression this week:

  • Running back Russell Oka '11 ran for a season high of 151 yards on 27 carries in Friday's football game against Chapman University.
  • Quarterback Jake Caron '11 was 19 of 33 for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Rachael Conrad ’13, Kayla Eland ’12, Alex Johnson ’13, and Colin Flynn ’12 all made strong showings at the Western Regional meet.
  • Catelyn Gumaer ’13, Kenzie Aries ’12, and Sarah Amos ’10 contributed to a banner week in Sagehen women's volleyball.

From PrezTrombley's State of the College address, a note on the state of Pitzer College Athletics:

For 2008–2009 a record number of Pitzer students (138) joined our sports teams, making up 33% of the Sagehen’s varsity athletes. Sagehen sports highlights this year include the baseball team being ranked number one in the country in April and in early May, winning their fourth consecutive SCIAC championship. Women’s water polo finished the season by winning its fifth Collegiate III Championship. For the second year they are ranked number one in division III. The women’s cross country team placed second at the NCAA Division III West Region, and the men’s team was named the All-Academic Team by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The women’s track and field team finished fourth in SCIAC Championships. The women’s tennis team finished fourth in NCAA Division III Team National Championship. A record 460 Pitzer students participated in intramural athletics this year, from soccer and softball to dodge ball and foosball.
